How to Price Glass Per Square Meter in South Africa
Pricing glass jobs accurately is the difference between a profitable glazing business and one that bleeds money on every installation. This guide breaks down how to calculate glass prices per square meter in the South African context.
The Basic Formula
The fundamental glass pricing formula is straightforward:
Total Price = (Area in m² × Rate per m² × Quantity) + Labour + Markup
Step 1: Calculate the Area
Measure the length and width in millimetres, then convert to square metres:
Area (m²) = (Length mm ÷ 1000) × (Width mm ÷ 1000)
For example, a window measuring 1200mm × 800mm = 0.96 m².
Step 2: Set Your Rate Per m²
Typical glass rates in South Africa vary by glass type:
- Clear float glass: R350 – R600/m²
- Tinted glass: R500 – R800/m²
- Laminated glass: R600 – R1,000/m²
- Toughened glass: R700 – R1,200/m²
- Double-glazed: R1,200 – R2,500/m²
These rates should cover your material cost plus a base margin. Adjust based on your supplier pricing and location.
Step 3: Add Labour
Labour charges depend on the job complexity. Common ranges:
- Simple window installation: R300 – R600
- Shower enclosure: R500 – R1,200
- Door installation: R400 – R800
Step 4: Apply Markup
Most glazing businesses apply a 10-20% markup on the subtotal to cover overheads and ensure profitability. This is especially important for smaller jobs where the margin on materials alone may not cover your travel and admin time.
Example Calculation
Let's say you're quoting a toughened glass shower panel:
- Dimensions: 900mm × 1800mm = 1.62 m²
- Rate: R900/m² (toughened)
- Glass cost: 1.62 × R900 = R1,458
- Labour: R800
- Subtotal: R2,258
- Markup (15%): R338.70
- Total: R2,596.70
