Glass Types and Pricing Guide for South African Glaziers

Knowing your glass types is essential for accurate quoting. Each type has different properties, applications, and price points. This guide covers the five most common glass types in South African glazing.

1. Clear Float Glass

The standard glass used in most windows and doors. Clear, flat, and affordable.

  • Typical uses: Windows, doors, cabinet glass
  • Price range: R350 – R600/m²
  • Thickness: 3mm, 4mm, 6mm
  • Note: Not safety glass — cannot be used in doors without toughening

2. Tinted Glass

Clear glass with a tint (usually grey, bronze, or green) to reduce heat and glare.

  • Typical uses: Sun-facing windows, office buildings
  • Price range: R500 – R800/m²
  • Thickness: 4mm, 6mm
  • Note: Popular in South African climates for heat reduction

3. Laminated Glass

Two or more glass layers bonded with a PVB interlayer. Holds together when shattered — a safety glass.

  • Typical uses: Shopfronts, car windscreens, security glazing
  • Price range: R600 – R1,000/m²
  • Thickness: 6.38mm, 8.38mm, 10.38mm
  • Note: Required by SANS for certain applications

4. Toughened (Tempered) Glass

Heat-treated glass that is 4-5 times stronger than normal glass. Shatters into small, safe pieces.

  • Typical uses: Shower enclosures, doors, balustrades, table tops
  • Price range: R700 – R1,200/m²
  • Thickness: 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm
  • Note: Cannot be cut after toughening — measure carefully

5. Double-Glazed (Insulated) Glass

Two panes of glass with a sealed air gap between them. Excellent insulation for heat and sound.

  • Typical uses: Energy-efficient windows, noise reduction
  • Price range: R1,200 – R2,500/m²
  • Thickness: 4-12-4, 6-12-6 (glass-gap-glass)
  • Note: Growing demand in South Africa for energy efficiency

Pricing Tips

  • Always confirm the glass type before quoting — the price difference between clear and toughened can be 2-3x
  • Thicker glass costs more per m² — adjust your rate accordingly
  • Safety glass (laminated and toughened) is required by SANS 10400 for doors, showers, and low-level glazing
  • Include a waste factor (5-10%) in your material cost for cutting losses
